BCLA cultivates strong community leadership skills in all students; our commitment is based on the premise that successful BCLA graduates are positive contributors to their communities.
Lessons of community leadership are taught in all four, core subject areas. In each area, an essential question is studied each year, beginning freshman year with broad themes and ending in a very personal self-examination senior year.
In their senior year, students apply their skills to a Capstone project in which they complete research on a topic of significant personal interest and then a relevant internship in this area. Capstone projects are presented to the larger BCLA community as a culminating activity each spring.
Over the next few years, BCLA faculty will be developing more comprehensive curriculum for teaching the foundations of leadership skills across the curriculum and through interdisciplinary collaboration of teachers in different subject areas. As these ongoing enhancements are implemented, students will be exposed to a variety of curricular resources and experiences around leadership, distinguishing their academic experience from more traditional curriculum.
